Abstract

Topic
This communication will present results of the project “Linguistic standardization revisited: mediatization, vernacularization and linguistic ideologies in contemporary Spain (ESTANDAREV)”, related to the degree of acceptance of the use of vernacular variants and regional forms in the media by 78 women and 73 men. These results will be relative to the situation of Catalan.

ESTANDAREV has the general objective 3 of “verifying the extent of vernacularization (Coupland, 2014), that is, greater tolerance towards linguistic variation, in the linguistic attitudes and ideologies of Spanish speakers, Catalan speakers, Galician speakers and Basque speakers in the Spanish territory.”

Data
The communication will present the first analyzes of a questionnaire evaluating 6 audio chats administered to 151 informants. As has already been said, the responses by gender will be analyzed for this conference. Priority will be given to audios that show more colloquial traits, even within the standard variety.
The selected sample are
● 3 groups of “educated” speakers (Soukup 2011) according to the formal variety of language, the “standard” to which they are exposed (in Catalonia, eastern and north-western speakers; in Valencia, valencian speakers). It is considered essential which is the actual regional standard variety to which each group of the sample is exposed.
● The sample consists of 151 informants (76 from Catalonia and 75 from the Valencian Country), with equal distribution between men and women, of all ages and the main subdialects. In the case of Catalonia, half of the sample will be “central” Catalan (n= 41) and the other half will be “north-western” Catalan (n= 35).

Methodology and theoretical framework(s)

Broadly speaking, the research falls within the frameworks for analyzing the attitudes of speakers (Armstrong, N. and Mackenzie, I. E. 2013), mainly within the framework of the third wave sociolinguistics (Eckert, 2018) and the theory of enregisterment (Eckert, 2018).

The open guise technique will be applied (Soukup, 2013) and will have been administered through the Qualtrics platform.
