Despite a history of rigorous research and debates on regional language variation of German (e.g., Ammon 1995; Ammon, Bickel & Lenz 2016; Elspaß & Möller 2003ff.; Dollinger 2019; Schmidlin 2011; Schmidt & Herrgen 2011; Variantengrammatik des Standarddeutschen 2018), there is still a lack of awareness and systematic incorporation of regional varieties in German Foreign Language (FL) teaching (Hägi 2006, 2015; Ransmayr 2006; Ruck 2017, 2020; Shafer 2018). In this paper, I examine the language ideologies as well as the language political tri-national cooperation among Germany, Austria, and Switzerland that form the backdrop of the discussion on integrating national standard varieties into German FL teaching. I argue that the pluricentric approach forms an important step in overcoming a monocentric bias, however, the pervasiveness of the standard language ideology (Milroy & Milroy 1999) inhibits sociolinguistically adequate represenations, which features both national standard as well as regional non-standard varieties, in German FL teaching. Departing from that, I explore goals for FL learning in higher education (MLA report 2007; Paesani, Willis Allen & Dupuy 2015; Kramsch 2020) and point out how these align with the necessity for broad linguistic and therefore also societal representations to support learnes in developing an awareness of the linguistic forms as well as discursive (Soukup 2016; Winkler 2015) and identity-based functions (De Cillia & Ransmayr 2019) that regional varieties have for the diverse speakers of German.
